Tatyana Evgenievna Gembitskaya, G.Dr.Sci (Med), Professor and Chairwoman, Department of Therapeutic Pulmonology of the Pulmonology R&D Institute of the Federal State Budgetary Educational Establishment of Higher Education First Pavlov State Medical University of St. Petersburg.
Dr. Gembitskaya graduated from the First Leningrad Medical Institute (now First Pavlov State Medical University of St. Petersburg) in 1966. In 1967–1972, she attended graduate school and then worked in the academic group of N. S. Molchanov, Full Member of the Russian Academy of Medical Sciences of the USSR. In 1971 she defended her Candidate dissertation. From 1972 and to the present day, she has been employed with the Research Institute of Pulmonology (successively as a junior research assistant, senior research assistant, and since 1990, head of the Department of Therapeutic Pulmonology).
In 1987 she defended her Grand Doctor of Medicine dissertation entitled “Clinical Attributes, Diagnostics and Treatment of Certain Hereditary Diseases of the Respiratory System in Adults.” In 1993 she was awarded the academic rank of the Professor of Pulmonology.
Since then, Dr. Gembitskaya’s research and practical work centered around internal diseases, pulmonology, medical genetics, and biochemistry.
She was the first, and then, permanent coordinator of all research in the field of cystic fibrosis in adults, head of the All-Union Center (1989), and, later, the Regional Center for Diagnostics and Treatment of Cystic Fibrosis in Adults.
Dr. Gembitskaya supervised 2 Grand Doctorate and 14 Doctorate dissertations. She has published a total of 352 academic papers. She has reviewed 25 monographs, the most recent being “Cystic Fibrosis” edited by N. I. Kapranov and N. Y. Kashirskaya, Moscow, 2014, 671 pages.
She made more than 120 reports at conferences in Russia and abroad. Dr. Gembitskaya has been involved in a large number of organizational, methodological and charitable activities aimed at improving diagnostics, treatment and social assistance to patients with cystic fibrosis and members of their families.
She is a recognized authority and expert in the field of orphan diseases of the lungs and cystic fibrosis, and has received many awards and recognitions, including commendations of the Ministry of Health of the Russian Federation. Member of the Russian Respiratory and European Respiratory Society.
In 1996–2006 she served as the Russian representative in the ECFS. Dr. Gembitskaya is member of the Board of the All-Russian “Association for Patients with Cystic Fibrosis”, and member of the Charitable Foundation “Ostrova”.
