Part of an adult donor lung transplanted into a child for the first time in Russia

At the end of September 2016, an unprecedented operation was carried out at the Federal State Budgetary Institution “Academician V.I. Shumakov Federal Research Centre of Transplantology and Artificial Organs” (Moscow) to transplant part of a lung into a child with cystic fibrosis. Previously, in Russia, lung transplant operations were performed only on adult patients with Cystic Fibrosis.

The Ostrova Charitable Foundation provided assistance to the family of a young patient from St Petersburg by covering the cost of their travel to Moscow in a special vehicle fitted with all the requisite medical equipment. The Kislorod Foundation helped arrange accommodation for the mother and daughter in the Moscow region during the preoperative and postoperative periods.
