In February 2017, Aleksandr was included on the waiting list for a donor transplant but the body of the 24-year-old was so exhausted that it needed special high calorie nutrition. Aleksandr applied to our foundation and became a participant in the Transplantation Programme, under which he received all the necessary nutrition and special tools for administering it. The waiting period was short, just a couple of months. There are few lucky ones like that – some patients have to wait for years for their chance for new breathing!
The 8-hour surgery proved successful. There will be a long and difficult rehabilitation period under the care of doctors at the Shumakov Research Institute. The Ostrova charitable foundation will provide Alexander with clinical nutrition during the rehabilitation period.
