The “Vocation” Prize was awarded to surgeons who performed a lung transplant on a child with cystic fibrosis

The ceremony awarding the “Vocation” Prize to the best doctors of Russia was held on June 18, 2017. Among the winners of this award was a team of transplant surgeons from the Federal State Budgetary Institution “Academician Shumakov Federal Research Centre for Transplantology and Artificial Organs”. In 2016, they conducted the first operation in Russia to transplant an adult donor’s lung to a child with cystic fibrosis. The doctors, who worked under the supervision of Dr. Sergei Gauthier, received the «Special Award of the First Channel» for saving the life of 14-year-old Katya Matveeva and transplanting lungs from an adult donor into her.

The First Channel’s «Health» program (broadcast on June 18, 2017) also described the unique operation and professional achievement of the team of transplant surgeons. They invited the doctors who performed the operation to their studio and set up a video link to talk with the patient and her parents. The members of the Ostrova Charitable Foundation and the Kislorod Foundation, which helped the young patient and her family, also took part in the program.
