Outbreak of Burkholderia cepacia in the Kemerovo Province

According to parents of cystic fibrosis patients living in the Kemerovo Province, 20 children were infected with a dangerous bacterium called cepacia (medical name – Burkholderia cepacia complex) while in hospital.

During that period, some of the children underwent a planned hospitalisation in the Russian Children’s Clinical Hospital in Moscow, and some in a provincial pediatric hospital in Kemerovo, where, according to an activist, there were no separate wards for individual children until June, 2017.

Parents also complained to the Public Chamber of the Russian Federation that the province had no outpatient care for patients with cystic fibrosis or help with medicine for comprehensive treatment of children at home.
